Spare Time? Really?

I need more lives than a cat, or find that eighth day of the week the Beatles were so fond of singing about.

Most authors can relate. If you have a job, family, house, bills, pets...you don't have enough time to do everything, or at least not without tearing your hair out by the roots that you forgot to touch up or can't afford to pay a colorist to do for you.

Anyway, one of my passions is quilting. I use that time to create something without words or a keyboard. I listen to Audible books when stitching, and music when I'm cutting fabric (because I can negotiate a sharp blade while listening to Nickelback and Seether, or whoever else is singing the loudest and drowning out the cussing caused by figuring out quarter, eighth and sixteen fractions of an inch measurements).

I make quilts for me, my family, friends and charities. Quilting and giving go together.

What do YOU create? I’d love to hear about it! Maybe you'll inspire me to find a ninth day of the week!

  1. An eighth day of the week sounds like a great idea! I've never quilted, but I have done rug-hooking, knitting, and cross-stitching. Though not for a while.

    1. I used to cross-stitch (a LOT) before my eyes turned 40. Now I have a couple of projects in bags, one of which my grandmother never finished and I'm bound and determined to do so for her...maybe when my eyes turn 80?

    1. You'll have to post pictures! I love to see what others are working on!

    2. The old Singer machines (the black, cast iron ones) are worth a lot of money. No lie! Some quilters ONLY use them because they sew such a perfect seam.

  3. I admire quilters, but I just found out there's a 'stitch n bitch' at my fave local indie coffee house on Thursday nites so I aspire to attending that because I actually do knit. I wonder if they will notice I am working on the same thing every time for a year?

  4. I workout and do stuff outside. When the weather is cooperative. I can quilt and cross stitch, but I have such a hard time sitting still long enough to do so. I even have a collection of old timey sewing machines--the one I use to quilt was made in the 50s :) Bought it for $10 at a garage sale! Has all the attachments and the case. (I'm proud of the silliest things.)

    1. Ha! My sewing maching is heavy and is almost older than me, but I love it.

  5. I like to knit and crochet and craft and mod podge whatever looks mod podge-able. I have quilted before, but I don't find a whole lot of joy in it, but I like knowing I can do it. Scrapbooking comes up once in a while. Card making. Beading...lots of stuff. I have my mom's problem--can't have still hands :)

  6. I thought about quilting, but now I've discovered chainmaille jewelry. It's fun and I really enjoy playing with silver rings. But silver is expensive, so I also use copper and aluminum. Setup my own etsy store - http://www.etsy.com/shop/StarlightFallsDesign to try and justify spending more money. :)

    1. I went to a Ren Faire one time and watched a man making chain mail jewelry. I believe he used aluminum, it was dull, not shiny like silver. I was fascinated by the process!

  7. There are a few quilters in my family. I'm lucky to have a quilt my grt. gram made in 1880's. I don't do much of creativity any more. My lupus has made even holding a pencil for any length of time difficult. After 20 yrs of being a pro artist, I rarely paint and draw.
